Next Steps Building Local Support for Letmdvote

Let MD Vote is now out in the open.

The website is live, the idea is clearly laid out, and people are starting to talk about it. That is a good beginning, but an idea only goes so far on its own. The next step is to start building visible support across Maryland.

One way to do that is through local governments.

We are asking towns, cities, and counties to consider adopting non-binding resolutions in support of a constitutional amendment that would allow Maryland citizens to place eligible measures on the statewide ballot.

A non-binding resolution does not change the law. It does not force the General Assembly to act. What it does is put a local government on the record.

It says that the people of that community should have a lawful and orderly way to bring important questions before voters without first needing permission from the legislature.

That may sound like a small step, but it gives local officials a chance to start the conversation. It also shows legislators in Annapolis that support for citizen ballot initiatives is not coming from one person, one town, or one political group.

This is where supporters can help.

You do not need to be a lobbyist or a political expert. You can contact your mayor, town council member, county council member, or county commissioner and ask whether they would be willing to introduce a resolution supporting citizen ballot initiatives in Maryland.

Let MD Vote can provide model resolution language, a short briefing document, and talking points that explain the proposal. We can also help answer questions or respond to common objections.

The request is simple:

Contact one local elected official. Send them the Let MD Vote website. Ask whether they would consider introducing a resolution in support of giving Maryland citizens the power to place eligible measures on the ballot.

Big changes usually begin with a few people willing to raise the question.
